time stood still…
jan 22, 2006…time stood still for all filipinos everywhere in the world. the streets of manila was empty for a brief moment…everyone was having mixed feelings of anxiety and excitement as we await the the rematch between erik ”el terrible” morales and our very own manny ”pacman” pacquiao.
before the game started, i was moved by how he reacted when jennifer bautista sang the philippine national anthem. i knew deep inside he was touched by the lyrics of the anthem for his aim was to bring honor to his country.
he’s a smart fighter. there were times that he could have finished the game at once like in rounds 2 and 6 when erik almost fell…but because he sees his opponent was not ready to give up yet, he took his time until erik was sooo tired in round 10 and he sees him giving up, right then and there he took him…he fell not just once but twice…the second time, it was a technical knock-out. malufet!!! never in erik morales’ boxing career did he fall…erik fought a lot of tough fighters but pacman made a mark in history as the only boxer who was able to do that to him. indeed he was prepared. he was in a better shape than erik was & he was more determined to regain the honor not only for himself as he explained, not only for his family, but for the whole country as well. another factor could be that this time, his gloves where not as thick as what he used in their first game last october…that would mean that his blows would be felt better this time. we must admit that manny’s punches are really fast and strong. i don’t think erik was prepared for that. manny was also a ’southpaw’ (hope i got that term right)…erik was not able to predict which hand will hit him next. manny is a lefty but his right hand was stronger this time, his defense improved, his stance, better.
it was a great fight. for some boxing fans, in fact, it was the best they’ve ever seen. it doesn’t mean that morales was less of a fighter than pacman. in fact he was one of the best ever…it doesn’t mean that luck was on manny’s side, he fought a great fight…it was just a matter of who was more determined to win this fight…and it was manny pacquiao.
what i really admire about this man is that he stays grounded despite the victories.
manny, we are so proud of you. mabuhay ka, idol!
